Thayer joins O's on Minor League deal

Reliever Dale Thayer signed a Minor League contract with an invitation to Baltimore's Spring Training camp on Wednesday, and the 35-year-old right-hander will be trying to rebound from a season in which he posted a 4.06 ERA for San Diego.

Set career-bests in wins (four), ERA (2.34), appearances (70), innings pitched (65.1 IP), WHIP (1.06) and games finished (25) for San Diego...Among Padres relievers, ranked tied for first in appearances, tied for second in wins, first in innings, tied for second in strikeouts (62) and second in ERA...Allowed just one run over his first 18 appearances of the season, pitching to a 2-0 record with a 0.53 ERA (1 ER, 17.0 IP)...Worked scoreless ball in 56 of his 70 outings, including 37 of his last 46 outings of the season...Had a season-best 15-game, 14.0-inning scoreless streak from 4/6 - 5/6…in terms of games, the streak was the second-longest of his career and the third-longest by a Padres reliever in 2014.

In his second campaign with the Padres and first spending the entire season at the big league level, set career-bests in wins (3), losses (5), appearances (69), innings (65.0 IP), strikeouts (64) and ERA (3.32)...Posted a 2.59 ERA (14 ER, 48.2 IP) with 48 strikeouts in his first 50 relief appearances...had a 5.51 ERA (10 ER, 16.1 IP) with 16 strikeouts over his final 19 appearances...Amongst Padres relievers, ranked 2nd in appearances (69), 3rd in innings (65.0), tied for 1st in strikeouts (64) and 3rd in ERA (3.32)...Had a 2.80 ERA (11 ER, 35.1 IP) in 35 appearances at home while recording a 3.94 ERA (13 ER, 29.2 IP) in 24 appearances on the road...Allowed only six hits in 34 at bats (.176) with runners in scoring position and two outs...Tossed 15.0 consecutive scoreless innings (June 25-July 30), limiting opposing hitters to a .236 (13-for-55) batting average over 15 appearances.

2012 In his first campaign with the Padres, set career-highs in nearly every pitching category, including games (64), innings (57.2), wins (two), saves (seven), strikeouts (47) and ERA (3.43). Signed by the Padres as a minor league free agent on 12/6/11. His 64 games pitched in were the third-most among all National League rookies and second-most on the team behind Brad Brach's 67 games. His seven saves were the most among all NL rookies and ranked third-most among all Major League rookies. Began the season with Triple-A Tucson, making seven appearances for Tucson, working scoreless baseball in each outing over 8.1 innings. Was selected from Tucson on 4/26 and worked scoreless ball over his first 10 outings from 4/29/5/20. Converted his first save of the season on 5/7 vs. COL, stepping in for Huston Street on the 15-day DL...the save was the second of his career and first since his Major League debut on 5/22/09 at FLA for TB, a 3.0-inning save. Earned his first career win on 6/25 at HOU with a scoreless inning of work. In 34 outings at Petco Park, went 1-1 with five saves and a 2.08 ERA(7 ER/30.1 IP), as opposed to a 1-1 record with a 4.94 ERA(15 ER/27.1 IP) in 30 outings on the road.
