2013

Was named National League Pitcher of the Month for September. Went 4-0 with a 1.00 ERA and .197 opponents average in five September starts. Finished the season with a five game winning streak (dating to 8/29) while posting an 0.84 ERA (4 ER/43.0 IP) with a .203 opponents average. Went 9-6 with a 2.26 ERA in 17 games (16 starts) at home, compared to 6-6 with a 4.04 ERA in 15 games (all starts) on the road. Each of his last nine starts were "quality" starts (dating to 8/7). Finished the season with a five game winning streak (six starts, dating to 8/29) and an 0.84 ERA (4 ER/43.0 IP) in that span while striking out 39 and walking just eight. Made his second career postseason start in Game 1 of the 2013 NLDS on 10/3 and began the game with three strikeouts (four overall) but went on to allow five runs (all earned) over 4.0+ innings while giving up nine hits and walking four. The Braves fell 6-1 to the Dodgers.

2012 Moved to the starting rotation on 7/31/12 and went 9-0 with an 0.97 ERA in 12 starts. Started the Wild Card game against St. Louis and suffered the loss, going 6.2 innings, allowing three hits, five runs (two earned) and no walks while striking out four. The Braves won Medlen's last 23 regular-season starts, the longest such streak in MLB history. It was the longest since the Yankees won 22 straight started by Whitey Ford over the 1950 and 1953 seasons. During the regular season, the Braves own a team record of 26-4 in Medlen's starts, including 12-0 in 2012. Allowed only six home runs in 138.0 IP, for a ratio of 0.39 HRs per 9 IP. His HR/9 IP ratio led the majors among pitchers with at least 100 IP. Was named NL Pitcher of the Month for both August and September. August marked the first career monthly award as he posted a 4-0 record and a MLB-best 0.50 ERA (2 ER in 35.2 IP). He fanned 35 while walking just four and held opposing hitters to a .213 batting average. In September, he went 4-0 and ranked first in the Majors with 46 strikeouts, third in the NL with 43.0 IP and third in wins. He held opponents to a .169 average and the team went 6-0 in his starts. Was the starting pitcher for 9/25's win over Miami that clinched a Braves' postseason berth. He did not earn a decision but tossed 7.0 "quality" innings while fanning eight. Went 8-0 with a 0.76 ERA through his first 10 starts of the season and, according to the Elias Sports Bureau, became only the second pitcher in franchise history to post an ERA under 1.00 and win at least eight games in a 10-start span. Warren Spahn went 10-0 with a 0.99 ERA in a 10-start span from 7/30-9/10/61. His 13-strikeout game on 9/14, coupled with a 12-strikeout effort against COL on 9/3, made him the first Braves pitcher since 1900 to have a pair of games with 12-or-more strikeouts in the same month. Owned a 0.83 ERA through his first five starts of the season, ranking second in Atlanta history (since 1966) in his first five starts (Buzz Capra, 0.60 ERA through his first five starts in 1974). Tossed his first career complete-game (9.0 IP), with a shutout on 8/16 vs. SD. Posted a 1-1 record with a 2.48 ERA in 38 games out of the bullpen. Was optioned to Gwinnett (AAA) on 5/29 in order to be stretched out to a starting pitcher. Re-joined the Major League team on 6/15 after making three starts with GWI (0-2, 4.72 ERA, 13.1 IP, 12 K).
