Earned two varsity letters in baseball playing for Keith Merkel at St. Mary's (AZ) High…Was named first-team All-State as a junior after posting a 8-2 record with an ERA of 0.95…Went 8-1 with a 0.50 ERA as a senior before earning the state of Arizona Player of the Year award along with a Baseball America All-America distinction…Was originally drafted in the fourth round of the 2005 First-Year Player Draft by the Angels, but elected to attend the University of San Diego…Was signed by Orioles scout Mark Ralston.
