Samuel Deduno...makes his off-season home in San Pedro de Macoris, Dominican Republic.

 

Attended Liceo Gaston College before signing with the Rockies as a 19-year-old non-drafted free agent on March 5, 2003.

 

Pitched for Team Dominican Republic in the 2013 World Baseball Classic...started the Championship Game on March 19 vs. Puerto Rico and earned the win after tossing 5.0 shutout innings...went 2-0 with a 0.69 ERA (1ER/13IP) and 17 strikeouts in the WBC.

 

Is the youngest of six children...he has four sisters and one brother.

 

Was originally added to a 40-man roster when the Rockies added him on Nov. 20, 2008...is signed to a one-year contract that runs through the 2015 season.

2014

Made 35 combined appearances between the Astros (5g) and Twins (30g)...was added by the Astros on a waiver claim at the end of August and made four relief appearances and one start for the club in September...among AL pitchers with at least 100 innings, ranked fifth in groundball to flyball ratio (2.42)...led the Majors with five relief appearances that lasted at least 4.0 innings...along with RHP Todd Redmond, ranked tied for first among MLB relievers with nine outings of 3.0+ innings...all of those outings came with Minnesota...had much more success out of the bullpen, as he posted a 3.41 ERA (22ER/58IP) with 56 strikeouts and 26 walks in his 26 total relief appearances with Houston and Minnesota...went 2-4 with a 5.91 ERA (28ER/42.2IP) in his nine starting assignments between the two clubs...posted a 3.12 ERA (3ER/8.2IP) with nine strikeouts in his five appearances with Houston (1 start)...allowed just five hits and five walks...his first four outings with the Astros were in relief (5.79 ERA, 3ER/4.2IP)...began the season with Minnesota, where he made the Opening Day roster in the bullpen...moved into the starting rotation for eight starts between May 6-June 14 when RHP Mike Pelfrey went on the Disabled List...returned to the bullpen before getting claimed by the Astros off waivers on Aug. 30...started the season with a 2.89 ERA (6ER/18.2IP) and 18 strikeouts in seven games during his first stint in the Twins bullpen...the last five of those seven outings were multi-inning appearances (two 4.0-inning outings)...had a streak of 13.2 scoreless innings from April 7-May 1 that was the third-longest scoreless streak in the Majors at the time...made eight starts with the Twins from May 6-June 14, going 2-4 with a 6.52 ERA (28ER/38.2IP)...had the longest relief outing of his career on July 4 vs. NYY...went 4.2 shutout innings, allowing three hits and no walks with four strikeouts in the Twins 6-5 loss to the Yankees...his one start with the Astros was the club's second-to-last game of the year on Sept. 27 at NYM...threw 4.0 shutout innings, allowing two hits and one walk with four strikeouts in the Astros 2-1 loss.

Was an invite to Twins spring training but missed the first few weeks pitching for Team Dominican Republic in the World Baseball Classic, going 2-0, 0.69 ERA (13.0 IP, 1 ER) with five walks and 17 strikeouts in three starts; started the Championship game March 19 vs. Puerto Rico, earning the win, tossing 5.0 shutout innings with two hits allowed, three walks and five strikeouts... Started the season with Triple-A Rochester and made just three starts, going 0-0, 2.70 ERA (16.2 IP, 5 ER)with 17 strikeouts... Had contract selected by Minnesota May 24... Went 3-0, 1.80 ERA (25.0 IP, 5 ER) in a four-start span May 29-June 15 for Minnesota...went 3-0, 1.67 (27.0 IP, 5 ER) in four starts July 13-August 2... Lasted just 3.0 innings August 29 vs. Kansas City after experiencing right shoulder soreness... Placed on 15-day disabled list August 30 with right shoulder soreness...transferred to the 60-day disabled list September 9... Held left-handed batters to a .204 batting average (47-for-230) while right-handers hit .331 (58-for-175)... Had arthroscopic surgery on right shoulder September 18.
