Scheppers set to have operation on left knee

Rangers reliever Tanner Scheppers has been diagnosed with torn articular cartilage in his left knee and is returning to Texas to have surgery. The initial diagnosis is he will be out until after the All-Star break.

Rangers avoid arbitration with three players

The Rangers avoided an arbitration hearing with infielder Jurickson Profar by agreeing to a one-year contract on Thursday, and the club did the same with catcher Robinson Chirinos and pitcher Tanner Scheppers on Friday.

Tanner Ross Scheppers…he and his wife, the former Jessica Reeder, were married on Dec. 10, 2011 and reside in Southlake, Texas…daughter Tatum Anne was born on Nov. 23, 2015...hobbies include body-boarding and video games… favorite athlete is Ichiro Suzuki…served as the spokesperson for the Autism Awareness Night at Globe Life Park in 2015, participated in the 2016 Rangers Winter Caravan…has donated to the Texas Rangers Baseball Foundation and the Baseball Tomorrow Fund.

2015

Totaled the second-most relief appearances of his career in three stints with the Rangers (Opening Day-April 27, May 17-Aug. 19, and Sept. 6-end of season…also spent time on the disabled list with a right ankle sprain (April 5-16) and left knee inflammation (Aug. 2-19)… spent balance of season with Class AAA Round Rock.

2014

The club's Opening Day starter went 0-1 with a 9.00 ERA (23 ER/23.0 IP) in 8 games/4 starts for the Rangers, as 2 disabled list stints derailed his season...averaged career highs in HR per 9 (2.3) and BB per 9 (3.9), career low in SO per 9 (6.7)...of his 8 games, 7 were in Arlington...was on disabled list 4/18-6/4 and 6/11-end of season with right elbow inflammation...it was announced on 7/31 that he would likely not pitch again in 2014, and he was transferred to the 60-day DL on 9/2.

2013

Emerged as one of the top setup relievers in the A.L. in first full MLB season, ranking among the league's relief leaders in appearances (T3rd, 76), wins (T4th, 6), holds (T4th, 27), innings (T4th, 76.2), and ERA (7th, 1.88)…tied Mike Adams' 2012 total for the most holds in club history and had the 5th most appearances ever for a Ranger, most for a right-hander… Scheppers was just the 5th pitcher in the last 10 years to post an ERA as low as 1.88 while making 76+ appearances, joining Fernando Rodney (2012 w/ TB) as only A.L. pitchers to do it in that span.

2012 Rookie had 2 stints with Texas: June 7-Aug. 25 and Sept. 1-end of season...spent rest of season at Round Rock (AAA)... ranked tied for fourth on club with 39 appearances and was tied for second on staff with 13 games finished...opponents hit .343 (47- 137) with 6 home runs, 9 walks, and 30 strikeouts...in his third pro season, marked his first campaign without a trip to the disabled list, though he missed a week with a bruised right knee sustained at Los Angeles-AL on Sept. 18. TEXAS: Recalled from Round Rock on June 7 for a day game in Oakland, making his ML debut that day against the A's (1.2 IP, 1 R-ER)...allowed solo HR to Brandon Moss...gave up runs in 7 of his first 11 career outings for a 9.00 ERA (11 ER/11.0 IP) through July 6...over next 23 outings from July 7-Sept. 13, spanning a stint at Round Rock, had a 1.00 ERA (2 ER/18.0 IP) to drop season figure to 4.03...gave up runs in 3 of last 5 outings beginning Sept. 15 (3 ER/2.0 IP) to finish at 4.45...also allowed 5 of 6 inherited runners to score in that season-ending span...sustained a bruised right knee in a collision with Chris Iannetta at home plate on Sept. 18 at Los Angeles-AL...threw 2 pitches, a hit batter and wild pitch, allowing 2 inherited runners to score before exiting with the injury...did not make next appearance until Sept. 25 vs. Oakland... converted first career save on June 29 vs. Oakland...first ML win was Aug. 16 at New York-AL and only loss was Sept. 15 vs. Seattle, giving up a solo HR to Justin Smoak after Rangers had overcome a 6-run deficit to tie the game. ROUND ROCK: Was 1-2, 3.48 (12 ER/31.0 IP) in 27 relief appearances with the Express, going 11-for-14 in save opportunities...had 31 strikeouts against just 4 walks...permitted runs in just 6 of 27 games...allowed 4 of 11 inherited runners to score... strikeouts in 19 of 27 outings. 2011 Combined to go 4-1 with a 3.71 ERA (18 ER/43.2 IP) and 2 saves in 28 games/one start with Round Rock (AAA) and Frisco (AA)...held opponents to a .252 average (41-163) with LHB at .190 (12-63) and RHB at .290 (29-100)...stranded 5 of 7 (71.4%) inherited runners, while limiting opposition to a .234 average (11- 47) with runners in scoring position...opened season as a starter, but spent bulk of the campaign in a relief role following a pair of early-season disabled list stints with back issues. 2010

Combined to go 1-3 with a 4.84 ERA (43 ER/80.0 IP) in 36 games/7 starts for Frisco (AA) and Oklahoma City (AAA) ... opponents batted .271 (85-314) with 30 walks, 90 strikeouts, and 6 home runs ... had 8 hit batters and 8 wild pitches ... finished 16 games ... was 6-for-7 in save chances ... had 2 inherited runners, none scored ... for the year, compiled a 1.438 WHIP ... went 0-1 with a 3.38 ERA (2 ER/5.1 IP) in 4 "A" game appearances for Texas in spring training.


FRISCO: Began the year at Frisco in his first non-independent ball action, posting no record with 2 saves and a 0.82 ERA (1 ER/11.0 IP) in 6 relief outings ... opponents batted .079 (3-38) with no walks, 19 strikeouts, and one home run ... was 2-for-2 in save chances ... tossed exactly 2.0 innings in each of first 5 appearances, at least 3 K's in each of those outings ... only run allowed was solo homer by Angels farmhand Brian Walker on April 13 vs. Arkansas, his 2nd appearance ... struck out 5 of 6 batters faced in 2.0 perfect innings on April 26 vs. San Antonio ... had 1.0 scoreless frame in final outing on April 29 vs. San Antonio.


OKLAHOMA CITY: Was promoted to Oklahoma City on April 30 and went 1-3 with 4 saves and a 5.48 ERA (42 ER/69.0 IP) in 30 games/7 starts with the RedHawks ... Pacific Coast League opponents batted .297 (82-276) with 30 walks, 71 strikeouts, and 5 home runs ... lefties batted .254 (33-130), with right-handers at .336 (49-146) ... had a 1.89 ERA (4 ER/19.0 IP) over first 8 outings (all in relief) at Triple-A, then made 6 consecutive starts (0-0, 5.84 ERA, 16 ER/24.2 IP) to raise season figure from 1.89 to 4.12 ... was on the disabled list with a "left hamstring strain" from June 5- 12, and made 6 consecutive starts upon his return ... only other start was his final outing of the season ... over 9 outings from July 20-Aug. 13, had a 3.14 ERA (5 ER/14.1 IP) to drop season mark to 3.88 ... beginning Aug. 14, had a 13.91 ERA (17 ER/11.0 IP) in final 7 games/one start to finish at 5.48 ... made his Triple-A debut on May 4 at Omaha (2.0 IP, 1 R-ER), allowing a homer to Royals' Scott Thorman ... had career-high 7 K's in 3.0-inning relief outing on May 26 at Tacoma, earning his first pro win ... took only blown save and a loss on Aug. 24 at Round Rock, allowing 3 runs (2 earned) in 1.0 inning ... in next-to-last outing of year on Sept. 1 vs. Nashville, gave up season-high 7 runs in 1.0 frame.

2009 The highest draft selection signed by Texas last year, Scheppers joined the organization after the minor league regular season and participated in instructional league in Surprise, Arizona...also pitched for the Surprise Rafters in the Arizona Fall League...prior to the draft, made 4 appearances with the St. Paul Saints in the independent American Association, and also conducted workouts and throwing sessions at Golden West (Calif.) Junior College in Huntington Beach...rated as the 9th-best overall prospect in last year's draft by Baseball America, the 7th-best pitching prospect...was ranked by that publication as the 4th-best right-handed pitcher in the draft. 2008 Selected by Pittsburgh with the 48th overall selection in the 2008 June draft after suffering a shoulder injury during the college season...did not sign with Pittsburgh, instead opting to sign with the independent St. Paul club for the 2009 campaign...did not pitch in 2008 after his shoulder injury.
