Resides in Fairmont, WV...In 2006, was an All-Big East selection as a catcher for West Virginia University after hitting .316 with seven homers and 38 RBI...Spent his first two full seasons of professional ball from 2006-07 as a catcher before converting to pitching mid-way through the 2008 season...He hit .208 over three minor league seasons as a catcher...Signed by Brian Hopkins (Cardinals).

Spent the majority of his first season in the Atlanta organization with the Major League club, appearing in 56 games for the Braves. Posted a 4-1 record with a 1.78 ERA, while striking out 74 over 65.2 IP. His 1.78 ERA ranked as the third-best bullpen ERA for the Braves behind Craig Kimbrel (1.31) and Luis Avilan (1.52). It was the 10th-best mark among major league relievers and the fifth-best mark in the National League. Set career highs in games (56), innings pitched (65.2) and strikeouts (74) and his 1.78 ERA was a career low. Opened the season with the Triple-A Gwinnett Braves and made four relief appearances (11.1 IP/6ER) before being recalled on 4/20 in place of the injured Blake DeWitt. Was optioned to GWI on 4/22 and appeared in two games before being recalled for a second and final time on 4/30. Among National League relievers with 60 or fewer appearances, ranked tied for fourth with 74 strikeouts. 2013 marked his first postseason appearance. He pitched in three National League Division Series games vs. LAD, going 0-1 with a 13.50 ERA. Tossed a perfect eighth inning in his postseason debut in Game 1 on 10/3 vs. LAD and notched a hold on 10/4 in Game 2 (0.2 IP/2 ER).
