The Royals have acquired left-hander Ryan Buchter and right-handers Trevor Cahill and Brandon Maurer from the Padres in exchange for left-handers Matt Strahm and Travis Wood, and Minor League infielder Esteury Ruiz.

Left-hander Brian Flynn, a candidate to possibly make the Royals' bullpen, will miss at least eight weeks after sustaining a broken rib while falling through the roof of a barn at his home.

Brian A. Flynn resides in Owasso, Okla. in the offseason...Selected in the 18th round of the 2008 First-Year Player Draft by Boston, but did not sign...Pitched two seasons (2009, 2011) at Wichita State, taking a redshirt year in 2010…posted a 6-4 record with a 4.28 ERA in 20 appearances (11 starts) with three complete games during his final collegiate season...Graduated from Owasso High School (Okla.), where he was named all-conference, Metro Pitcher of the Year, all-state, preseason All-America and Louisville Slugger All-America.

2016

Brian spent a majority of the season with New Orleans (AAA), making two appearances over two stints with the Marlins...Recalled on June 27, making a three-inning relief appearance against Oakland, allowing 2 runs on 4 hits…also made a spot start for an injured Jared Cosart on August 7, suffering a 7-2 setback at Pittsburgh...Among qualifying pitchers in the Pacific Coast League, ranked 10th in ERA (4.08), tied for 11th in starts (25), 13th in innings (139.2) and tied for 21st in strikeouts (104)...Named PCL Pitcher of the Week on April 21, after tossing 7.0 shutout innings at Iowa, allowing one hit and one walk in a 1-0 triumph...Posted a 4-1 record with a 2.31 ERA (9 ER in 35.0 IP) over six starts during the month of May…Had a 5.12 ERA (40 ER in 70.1 IP) over his final 13 starts of the season.

2013

Began third professional season with Double-A Jacksonville before being promoted to Triple-A and eventually the Major League club in Miami. At Minor League level, combined to go 7-12 with 2.63 ERA (161.0 IP/47 ER) in 27 starts. Led Pacific Coast League in ERA (2.80), ranked fourth in WHIP (1.21) and sixth in strikeouts (122). Made four starts with Jacksonville to start season, going 1-1 with 1.57 ERA (23.0/4) prior to earning promotion to New Orleans on April 26. Allowed just three walks compared to 25 strikeouts in 23.0 innings with Suns. With Jacksonville, won first decision of season on April 4 vs. Jackson. Allowed just four hits over 6.0 scoreless innings while retiring a season-high nine by strikeout. Made first career Triple-A start on April 27 at Oklahoma City, allowing four runs on five hits over 5.1 innings. Held 4.53 ERA (59.2/30) and 2-6 record over first 10 starts with Zephyrs, surrendering three-or-more runs five times. Over final 13 starts, was 4-5 with a 1.49 ERA (78.1/13), allowing two-or-fewer earned runs 11 times. Despite going 3-9 prior to break, named Pacific Coast League Midseason All-Star with 3.59 ERA (85.1/34). Earned PCL Pitcher of the Week honors for week of July 22-28 after going 1-0 with 0.00 ERA in two starts. Allowed just seven hits and three walks over 14.2 innings, while striking out a league-leading 16. Had contract selected by Miami on September 3 and made MLB debut against Cubs on Sept. 4. Allowed three runs on six hits (two home runs) with three walks and two strikeouts over 4.0 innings. Took loss in second start, Sept. 12 vs. Atlanta, surrendering six runs on six hits (one home run) with six walks and four strikeouts over 4.0 frames. Tossed 6.0 innings in next start, Sept. 17 at Philadelphia, taking loss after giving up six runs on 11 hits (one home run) with one walk and four strikeouts.

2012

Opened 2012 season at Single-A Lakeland in Detroit Tigers' system, posting an 8-4 record and 3.71 ERA (102.0/42) in 18 starts. Participated in Arizona Fall League, going 1-3 with a 3.63 ERA (22.1/9) in seven starts for Phoenix Desert Dogs.
