Matthew R. Gorgen...Played collegiately at Cal, where he was the Bears' top closer and a 3-time honorable mention All-Pac-10 selection during his college career... posted a 2-2 record with a 3.48 ERA and 9 saves in 28 appearances during his senior season... finished second among Cal's all-time leaders in saves (20) and eighth in appearances (88)...Graduated from Clayton Valley High School in Concord, Calif....was a first-team all-league selection and a two-time second-team All-East Bay pick...was named Clayton Valley's athlete of the year as a senior, finishing with a 1.91 ERA and batting .320....recorded 66 strikeouts in 63.0 innings with a 1.61 ERA as a junior and had a 23-inning consecutive scoreless streak...also earned second-team All-East Bay honors as a quarterback...His twin brother, Scott, played baseball at UC Irvine and was selected in the fourth round of the 2008 First-Year Player Draft by the Cardinals. 2010 Tied for the Southern League lead in saves with 22 after posting a 3-2 record and 1.65 ERA while allowing only 21 walks and striking out 47 for Double-A Montgomery in the Rays organization...Also led the league with 37 games finished and was named to the Southern League Midseason All-Star Team...the Montgomery Advertiser selected him as the Biscuits MVP...Converted 16 straight save opportunities from April 14-July 2...Matched his career-high with 4 strikeouts on July 10 vs. Mobile...Missed most of July with tendinitis in his right arm...Held righties to a .150 average (15-for-100) with 8 walks and 31 strikeouts...Entered the season as the 28th-best prospect in the Rays system, according to Baseball America. 2009 Opened the season with Single-A Charlotte and recorded 15 saves and a 0.57 ERA with 16 walks and 59 strikeouts in 28 games before his promotion to Montgomery on July 17...Finished the season with a 3-1 mark and 2.38 ERA with 4 saves in 16 games at Montgomery...saw his control desert him after the promotion to Double-A, as he walked 13 and fanned only 18 in 22.2 innings...Struck out a career-high 4 batters over 2.0 innings on Aug. 12 vs. Mississippi...Pitched for the Phoenix Desert Dogs in the Arizona Fall League following the regular season, where his control issues remained after averaging 2 ½ baserunners per inning...overall, posted a 0-1 record and 10.38 ERA with a save while walking 8 and striking out 12 in 8.2 innings over 10 appearances. 2008 Dominated the New York-Penn League in his first professional season after posting a 1-1 record and 1.96 ERA with 13 saves in 22 appearances...struck out 35 batters in 23.0 innings while walking only 5...Made his professional debut with Single-A Hudson Valley on June 19 vs. Aberdeen and tossed a scoreless inning while collecting a season-high-tying 3 strikeouts...Converted 13 of 15 save opportunities...Held right-handed hitters to a .085 average (4-for-47) with 2 walks and 25 strikeouts...Converted all 5 save opportunities and posted a 1.13 ERA (1 ER in 8.0 IP) with 14 strikeouts during a 7-game period in August
