Marcus Andrew Semien was originally signed by White Sox scout Adam Virchis…he and his wife, Tarah, have a son, Isaiah…graduated from St. Mary's High School in Berkeley, Calif. in 2008…attended the University of California-Berkeley…earned Honorable Mention All-Pac-10 honors in 2010…helped lead Cal to the College World Series in 2011…was the A's recipient of the MLBPAA Heart and Hustle Award in 2016, which honors active players who demonstrate a passion for the game of baseball and best embody the values, spirit and traditions of the game.

2016

Played in all but three games and batted .238 with 27 home runs and 75 RBI in 159 games…is the fifth shortstop in Athletics history to hit 20 home runs (Miguel Tejada five times, Eddie Joost twice, Bobby Crosby and Bert Campaneris once) and his 27 home runs tied for fourth in Athletics history by a shortstop…they were the most since Miguel Tejada had 27 in 2003…tied Trevor Story (COL) for the most home runs in the majors by a shortstop…they were second most in the American League over the last 12 years (30, J.J. Batted .257 with 15 home runs and 45 RBI in a team-leading 155 games in his first full season in the majors…started the year strong and finished strong but struggled in between…hit .314 with six home runs and 15 RBI over his first 40 games through May 18, .195 with two home runs and seven RBI over a 63-game stretch from May 19 to July 31, and .283 with seven home runs and 23 RBI over his final 52 contests…committed a Major League leading 35 errors to set an Oakland record for errors in a season… broke the previous mark of 34 set by Bert Campaneris in 1968…the errors were the most by an Athletic since Campaneris had 35 with the Kansas City A's in 1965 and they were the most by an A's shortstop since Dick Howser had 38 in 1961…they were the most by a Major League shortstop since Jose Valentin had 36 with Chicago (AL) in 2000…had a .947 fielding percentage, which was the lowest by an A's shortstop since Campaneris had a mark of .938 in 1965 and the lowest by an American League shortstop since Mike Caruso fielded .944 with Chicago in 1998…committed 28 errors in 89 games at shortstop before the All-Star Break but just seven in 63 games after the break…batted .329 (50-for-152) against left-handed pitching compared to .230 (93-for-404) against right-handers…his average against lefties ranked seventh in the AL…has a .306 (77-for-252) career average against lefties, .228 (138-for-604) against righties…tied for second among AL shortstops with 15 home runs (Correa, HOU 22)…tied for fourth in the AL with six home runs batting ninth…hit 13 of his 15 home runs during the day, 10 on the road and 10 with the bases empty…had a .208 batting average with runners in scoring position and was 4-for-23 (.174) with the bases loaded…batted .294 with 10 of his 15 home runs against AL West competition, .223 against everyone else…ranked second in the AL in highest line drive percentage (29.6%), sixth in most at bats per RBI (12.36) and tied for seventh in stolen bases off a left-handed pitcher (6)… was 6-for-7 (85.7%) in stolen base attempts against lefties, 5-for-9 (55.6%) against righties…appeared exclusively at shortstop on defense where he played in 152 games, including 147 starts…ranked third among AL shortstops in double plays (99) and fourth in total chances (656)…also went 3-for-7 (.429) with a double, triple and walk as a pinch hitter…is now 6-for-10 (.600) with two doubles, a triple, two RBI and two walks in the pinch in his career…led the A's with 50 starts batting ninth and 43 starts hitting eighth…hit in every spot in the order except third, fourth and fifth.

CHICAGO: Was the White Sox Opening Day starter at second base March 31 against Minnesota and went 0-for-4…went 0-for-6 the next game but then connected on the go-ahead home run in the eighth inning against the Twins April 3 for his first hit of the season…it snapped a career-high 0-for-17 streak dating back to 2013…it also started a career-high seven-game hitting streak from April 3 to 9 (10-for- 31, .323)…had a career-high four hits April 8 at Colorado…joined Avisail Garcia (also four hits) as the first Sox teammates, 23 or younger, to collect four hits in the same game since Harold Baines and Harry Chappas on April 20, 1980 at Baltimore (Source: Stats, Inc.)…hit a go-ahead home run in the eighth inning April 13 vs. Cleveland, his second such homer of 2014…the last White Sox to hit two go-ahead homers in the eighth inning or later over the first 13 games of a season was Dick Allen in 1972 (source: Elias)…started in the leadoff spot April 20 at Texas and had his second career four-hit game while driving in a career-high four runs…matched his career high for RBI three games later at Detroit April23 when he hit his first career grand slam, a game-winning shot in the seventh inning off Ian Krol in the Sox 6-4 win…hit the game-winning, RBI double in the 12th inning May 5 at Chicago (NL)…was optioned to Charlotte June 1 when Jose Abreu was reinstated from the disabled list but returned Sept. 2 when the Knights season concluded…hit the game-winning, solo home run in the sixth inning Sept. 11 against Oakland…became the first White Sox number nine hitter to homer in a 1-0 win since Early Wynn on May 1, 1959 against Boston…had the game-tying RBI single in the ninth inning off David Price Sept. 23 at Detroit.

CHARLOTTE: Had a .502 slugging percentage with Charlotte, which was his best as a minor leaguer… joined the Knights June 2 and from that point through the end of the season, he led the International League in walks (53)…also ranked second in extra base hits (38) and tied for second in runs (152)…batted .321 (25-for-78) against left-handed pitching compared to .249 (56-for-225) against right-handers… hit 10 of his 15 home runs at home…10 were solo shots and seven came in the first inning…his average improved each month as he hit .188 in June, .286 in July and .326 in August…added 23 walks in 28 games in August for a .463 on-base percentage…appeared in 42 games at shortstop, 17 at third base, 11 in left field, eight at second base and seven at designated hitter…committed six errors, including five as a shortstop (.973 fielding percentage) and one as a third baseman (.981)…batted .327 as a shortstop, .212 at all other positions…saw his most action with 45 games from the three spot in the order…batted .183 over his first 30 games through July 4…then went 21-for-57 (.368) over a 14-game stretch from July 5 to 21 to boost his average to .247…homered in three consecutive games around the All-Star Break from July 12 to 17…reached base safely in 24 consecutive games from Aug. 5 to 30…hit .370 with a .500 on-base percentage over that stretch…had a season-best eight-game hitting streak from Aug. 18 to 25… went 15-for-30 (.500) with three home runs and seven RBI during the streak…homered in three straight games a second time, Aug. 22-24 against Norfolk.
