Rays to begin season without Boxberger

When closer Brad Boxberger began experiencing some discomfort while throwing off the mound this spring, the Rays thought it was probably nothing more than a tight hamstring. It turned out to be more serious than that.

2015

His 70 appearances tied SEA Carson Smith for the AL rookie lead and set a Rays rookie record...the previous mark of 64 was shared by Esteban Yan (1998) and Ruddy Lugo (2006)...led the AL outright with 62 apps through the end of August, and finished the season tied for 9th…Set a club record by retiring 32 consecutive batters faced, June 6-24, breaking the mark previously held by Kyle Farnsworth (26) in 2011...passed Farnsworth on June 22 vs. TOR...according to the Elias Sports Bureau, it was the longest streak by any rookie since COL David Cortes (33) from Aug 6-27, 2005…His .192 opp avg. Earned a September call-up with the Rays...appeared in 11 games after his selection to the major league roster Sep 1...posted a .200 opp avg. (6-for-30) and struck out 14 of 37 batters faced (37.8 pct.)...Allowed 6 of 8 inherited runners to score, including 5 in his final two outings...Made his Rays debut Sep 1 vs. BOS and allowed a game-tying single to Yoenis Cespedes in the 8th (run charged to Jeff Beliveau)...was his first app in the majors since Aug 17, 2012 with LAA...On Sep 10 at NYY, threw a career-high 2 IP and retired all 6 batters faced...Suspended 50 games in early May for a second violation of the Minor League Drug Prevention and Treatment Program for a drug of abuse...returned June 26 and compiled a 1.42 ERA (25.1-IP, 4-ER) in 18 apps after that for Durham.

2013

Spent his first season in the Rays organization with Triple-A Durham…appeared in 41 games with the Bulls, compiling a 5-3 record, 3 saves and 2.82 ERA (67-IP, 21-ER)…struck out 80 batters compared to just 24 walks…held opponents to a .156 avg. (35-for-225), lowest among International League relievers and allowed only 8.06 base runners per 9 IP, 2nd lowest among IL relievers…established a career high with 67 IP.

2012 Began season with Double-A Arkansas and established a 3-0 record while allowing just one run in 25.1 innings pitched (0.36 ERA) across 21 appearances with the Travelers...First 14 relief outings of the season were scoreless...Promoted to Triple-A Salt Lake in June and earned three saves for the Bees in 19 relief appearances prior to promotion to the Major League roster...Made big league debut with Angels on August 16 vs. Tampa Bay, tossing a scoreless ninth inning with a walk and one strikeout...Also appeared out of the 'pen the following night and allowed one run on two hits with two walks in an inning of work...Concluded the season at Salt Lake with six relief appearances allowing eight earned runs in 7.1 innings pitched...Overall was 0-1 with a 5.08 ERA (33.2 IP - 19 ER) in 25 outings with the Bees. 2011 Started the year with two appearances with Salt Lake, before spending the remainder of the season with Arkansas...Led all Travelers' relievers with 67 strikeouts. 2010 Split the year between Rancho Cucamonga and Arkansas, combining for a 4-1 overall record with a 3.08 ERA (52.2 IP - 18 ER) and 87 strikeouts. 2009 Spent entire 2009 season with Rancho Cucamonga and posted an impressive 7-1 record in 34 relief outings with a 3.76 ERA (64.2 IP - 27 ER). 2008 Made professional debut with 16 appearances at Orem and three with the Arizona Summer League Angels.
