Astros outright Singleton to Triple-A

The Astros cleared two spots off their 40-man roster on Tuesday by outrighting former top prospect Jon Singleton to Triple-A Fresno and losing infielder Nolan Fontana, who was claimed off outright waivers by the Angels.

•Attended West Orange High School in Winter Garden, Fla...earned Third Team All-State as a senior in Class 6A...also chosen as All-Area Central Florida by ESPN Rise Magazine, First Team All-District, First Team Central Florida Metro Conference and was named West Orange's Most Valuable Player during his final season...led West Orange to its first-ever district championship in 2008.

 

•Was a member of the 2008 USA 18-U National Team that claimed the silver medal at the World Junior Championships in Edmonton, Alberta...named to the All-Tournament team at shortstop...was also a member of the 2007 16-U USA National Team that captured the World Youth Championship in Venezuela.

 

•Attended the University of Florida from 2010-12 and was named Second Team All-SEC and All-Defensive Team in each of his three seasons...became one of three Gators to receive All-SEC honors three times...helped the Gators make three trips to the College World Series...was a career .287 hitter (205x715) with 37 doubles, 17 homers and 153 walks...selected by Houston in the second round of the June 2012 draft...signed by Astros scout John Martin.

 

•Is the grandson of All-Star RHP Lew Burdette...Burdette played 18 seasons with six teams, amassing a 203-144 record with a 3.66 ERA and 1074 strikeouts...he helped lead the Milwaukee Braves to the 1957 World Series Championship.

Spent his entire season at Triple A Fresno appearing in a career-high 117 games...also tied career highs with 21 doubles and six triples...finished his season ranking second in the Pacific Coast League with 74 walks, trailing only Memphis' Dean Anna (77)...started games at four different positions for the Grizzlies: shortstop (52g), second base (30g), third base (23g) and left field (1g)...posted a .273 (33x121) average with a .413 OBP against left-handed pitching...made his second career postseason appearance and played in nine games for Fresno during their Triple A Championship run...hit .241 (7x29) with a .405 OBP and eight walks in his nine contests.
