Nolan James Arenado was signed by Rockies scout Jon Lukens … parents are Millie and Fernando Arenado … he is of Cuban (father) and Puerto Rican (mother) descent … attended El Toro High School in Lake Forest, Calif. where he played shortstop and catcher … was teammates with New York Yankees catcher Austin Romine and both had their numbers retired in a joint ceremony in Feb., 2014 … hit .517 (45-for-87) with 14 doubles, one triple and five home runs for El Toro in 2009 with at least one hit in all but one of his 28 games played … he drew 19 walks compared to five strikeouts and finished the season with a .615 on-base percentage and a .874 slugging percentage … committed to Arizona State University … was rated the 17th best catcher available in the draft by Baseball America, although he was drafted as an infielder … was also rated as the 31st best prospect in the state of California by Baseball America … brother of Jonah Arenado, a third baseman in the Giants organization and cousin of Josh Fuentes, a third baseman in the Rockies organization … they all lived together during 2015 Spring Training in Arizona … serves as a spokesman for the Rockies' "Home Run for Kindness" program, a high school assembly program designed to eradicate violence in schools through the practice of random acts of kindness … some of his favorite musicians include Red Hot Chili Peppers, Rage Against the Machine and Kanye West … enjoys playing golf and would have tried to be a professional golfer if he didn't play baseball ... resides in Lake Forest, Calif.

Began 2013 season at Triple-A Colorado Springs before having his contract selected to Major League roster on 4/28...made MLB debut 4/28 at ARI...notched first MLB hit, HR and RBI (all off Josh Wall) in Rox 12-2 win 4/29 at LAD (3-for-6)... Despite not joining the Big League club until late April, led the club in games played (133) and ranked 2nd in doubles (29)... Ranked among the top five of Major League rookies in the following categories: hits (130, 1st), doubles (29, 1st), RBI (52, 4th), average (.267, 1st among qualifiers), extra-base hits (43, 2nd) and total bases (197, 3rd)... Crushed his first career grand slam in what was his second career home game on 5/4 vs. TB off David Price...had the Rockies lone walk-off home run in 2013, a solo shot on 6/7 vs. SD off Joe Thatcher...
