Phils acquire utility man Kelly from Blue Jays

The Phillies acquired utility man Ty Kelly from the Blue Jays in exchange for cash considerations, Philadelphia announced on Saturday afternoon. To make room for Kelly on the 40-man roster, the Phillies moved right-hander Clay Buchholz to the 60-day disabled list.

Tyler Patrick Kelly…graduated from St. Mary's (CA) High School in 2006…played one season at Loyola Marymount (2007) before transferring to University of California-Davis for sophomore and junior seasons (2008-09)…originally selected by the Baltimore Orioles in the 13th round of the 2009 First Year Player Draft.

2014

Played in a team-high 134 games at Tacoma (AAA), starting 64 at second base, 36 at third base and 20 in the outfield (15 RF & 5 LF). Had two outfield assists while playing right field...Reached base safely via walk or hit in 109 of 134 games...Hit a career-high 15 home runs. His previous single-season high was 11 during the 2012 season...Led the Rainers in runs (81), hits (120), RBI (80) and games played (134)...The 80 RBI and 134 games played marked his single-season highs...Ranked 2nd in the Pacific Coast League wtih 85 walks, trailing only Joc Pederson (Dodgers) who had 100...Posted two multi-home run games (4/29 at Sacramento & 7/10 at Salt Lake). Had a career day at Salt Lake going 3- for-4 with 2 HR and 7 RBI including his first professional grand slam off Michael Kohn (8th inning), and a three-run homer (2nd inning) earlier in the game...Switch-hitter hit 14 of his 15 home runs vs. right-handed pitchers...Tallied 21 multi-RBI games with eight of three RBI or more...Batted .378 (42-111, 7 HR) with runners in scoring position and .538 (7-13) with bases loaded...Made one appearance on the mound, tossing the 9th inning of a game vs. Iowa (8/25) with a perfect inning.

Walked 102 times combined between Tacoma (51 BB, 54 G) and AA Bowie in the Baltimore organization, ranking T2nd amongst all minor league players…began season with Bowie, appearing in 72 games…prior to trade, ranked amongst the Eastern League leaders in runs scored (2nd, 51), doubles (T2nd, 21) and walks (3rd, 51)…traded to Seattle and assigned to Tacoma on July 1…reached base safely in 50 of 53 games with an at-bat, including recording a hit in 37 games…walked a career-high 5 times on Aug. 16 vs. Colorado (1x2, 2 R, 3B, RBI, 5 BB); one of 10 minor league players to record 5 walks in a single game in 2013…5-walk game tied a PCL single-game record…recorded 5 consecutive multi-hit games to conclude the season, Aug. 28-Sept. 1 (.632/12x19, 3 R, HR, 3 RBI, 4 BB); raised season average from .287 to .320 during this stretch.

2012

Led all Orioles farmhands in hits (154) and total bases (220) for the season combined between Frederick, Bowie and Norfolk…started at 3B and was 2-for-4 with an RBI in California/Carolina League All-Star Game in Winston-Salem June 19…had 2nd-longest hitting streak in Carolina League in 2012 with an 18-game streak from June 21-July 8 (.412/28x68)…led Frederick in walks (54) and on-base percentage (.460), while finishing 2nd in hits (91), home runs (9) and runs scored (47)…Went 4-for-4 with 2 home runs, 3 runs and 3 RBI in his Keys finale July 15 against Carolina…was the active batting leader in the Carolina League at .346 when promoted to Bowie on July 16.

2011

Spent 2nd season with Delmarva….selected to the South Atlantic League Midseason All-Star team….tied for 3rd-longest hit streak in the SAL at 16 consecutive games…led the team in runs scored (63), hits (125) and at-bats (457), was 2nd in games played (120), RBI (46), walks (5th in the SAL, 67) and 4th in stolen bases (11).

2010

Finished 5th in the South Atlantic League with 68 walks with Delmarva…led the club in games played, hits, RBI and runs scored…had a career-high 5 RBI April 11 at Greenville.

2009

Began pro career with Aberdeen and named 2009 IronBirds MVP…named to the 2009 New York-Penn League All-Star Team…led the team in walks (33) and finished 2nd on the team in runs scored (31) and hits (60)…had a career-high 5 hits July 11 against Hudson Valley.
