Blue Jays DFA Salty after rough start at plate

Jarrod Saltalamacchia's brief tenure with the Blue Jays has come to an end after the veteran catcher was designated for assignment on Friday afternoon. Luke Maile was recalled from Triple-A Buffalo to take over Saltalamacchia's role as Toronto's primary backup to Russell Martin. The 26-year-old Maile was claimed off waivers from the Rays earlier this month and was hitting .195/.214/.195 for the Bisons.

Luke was on the golf team in high school and still golfs quite a bit in his free time, boasting a 3 handicap...Luke's hands are so large that he can grip seven baseballs in one hand...He and his wife, Paige, married on Nov 1, 2014… on their first anniversary, she ran the New York Marathon, 26.2 miles through the city's five boroughs…Paige is a mechanical engineer…the couple met when he was playing college summer ball for the Amsterdam (N.Y.) Mohawks, where she was working a summer job at the split-the-pot booth...His grandfather, Dick Maile, was an AllAmerican in basketball at Louisiana State University and his father, Rich, was a cornerback on the Kentucky football team…his mother, Laurie, ran cross country and track in high school…has four younger siblings...Luke was a good student who won a couple creative writing awards in high school.

Recalled from Triple-A Durham over the All-Star break…started 35 of the club's 74 games in the second half (34-C, 1-DH)…played 14 innings at 1B off the bench...Caught 7 of 25 attempted base stealers (28.0 pct.), the best rate ever by a Rays rookie backstop (min. 10 SB attempts)...Rays pitchers compiled a 3.14 ERA (301-IP, 105-ER) with Maile behind the plate, compared to a 4.48 ERA with all other catchers...Had a .273 avg. (15-for-55) in 20 games at Tropicana Field, compared to a .188 avg. in 22 games on the road...Had a 10-game stretch from Aug 16-Sep 2 when he hit .429 (12-for-28) with 7 runs, 3 2B, 3 HR and 9 RBI…apart from that, hit .165 (15-for- 91) with 0 HR and 6 RBI in 32 games...Hit the first 3 HR of his career, the first coming on Aug 20 vs. TEX, a solo shot off RH A.J. Selected from Triple-A Durham on Sep 1...became the 51st player used by the Rays in 2015, one shy of the club record (2000), and 18th rookie, extending the club record…Appeared in 15 games (9 starts) at catcher...of his 9 starts, 5 came with Matt Moore as the starting pitcher...Moore posted a 1.72 ERA (31.1-IP, 6-ER) while paired with Maile…Made his major league debut Sep 1 at BAL as a pinch-hitter, with the Rays leading 11-0...his first start was Sep 5 at NYY...his first career hit and RBI came on Sep 12 vs. BOS, a pinch-hit double off Rick Porcello...became the first Ray to record his first career hit as a pinch-hitter since Tim Beckham on Sep 19, 2013 vs. TEX, and first to have it go for extra bases (as a PH) since Desmond Jennings doubled on Sep 11, 2010 at TOR…Went 2-for-28 (.071) over his first 12 games, through Sep 29...went 4-for-7 (.571) over his last 3 games…Only one runner attempted to steal against him, and Maile threw him out: TOR Ben Revere (31 SB), in the Oct 4 season finale...with Durham, threw out 33.8 pct.
