Edgin targets 2016 opener after elbow surgery

As expected, Mets reliever Josh Edgin underwent season-ending Tommy John surgery on his left elbow on Tuesday. Edgin hopes to return by Opening Day 2016.

Joshua Wayne (Josh) Edgin graduated from Mercersburg Academy (PA) before attending Ohio State University in 2007...He transferred to Francis Marion University (SC) in 2009... Drafted in the 50th round of the 2009 First-Year Player Draft by Atlanta, but did not sign.

2014

Began the year with Las Vegas (AAA) of the Pacific Coast League...Was recalled on May 15...Missed over two weeks (August 24-September 8) due to left elbow soreness...Retired the first 23 first batters faced, a franchise record to start a season...His streak ended on July 7...Retired 40 of 47 first batters...Had a 1.32 ERA, the fifth-lowest in the majors among pitchers with 25.0 or more innings...Allowed one earned run with two walks and 20 strikeouts in 16.2 innings (0.54 ERA) on the road...It was the lowest ERA in the NL (minimum 15.0 innings) and the second-lowest in the majors to Oakland's Fernando Abad (0.36)...His 0.54 road ERA was the second-lowest in team history behind Pedro Feliciano (0.30 ERA in 2006) using a minimum of 15.0 innings...Did not allow an earned run in August or September (17 games, 10.0 innings)...He allowed seven hits and struck out 14 during that span...He had a 0.86 ERA (two earned runs/21.0 innings) from June 5 through the end of the year (37 games)...Also did not surrender a run in 13 day games (7.0 innings)...Held lefthanders to a .185 (12-65) batting average and righties to a .219 (7-32) mark.

Allowed two earned runs in 23 outings, over 19.1 innings for a 0.93 ERA from June 11 through his final appearance on July 29...During that stretch, lefties hit 6-32 (.188) off him... Tossed 9.2 scoreless innings from June 30-July 13...Also had 7.0 inning scoreless stretch from April 26-June 25... Stranded 18 of 22 inherited runners, the 16th-best percentage (81.8) in the NL (minimum 22 inherited runners)...Stranded 14 of his last 16 inherited runners... Earned his first major league save on July 5 at Milwaukee..Hurled 1.1 scoreless innings... Picked up a win on July 8 at San Francisco working 2.0 scoreless innings in New York's 4-3, 16-inning win... Had a 9.64 ERA in April (10 earned runs/9.1 innings) and recorded a 0.87 ERA (one earned run/10.1 innings) when pitching on consecutive days... Overall, righties are 13-55 (.236) off him and lefties are 13-52 (.250)...
