D'Arnaud to have Tommy John surgery, Plawecki also out

The Mets have lost their top two catchers, with Travis d'Arnaud scheduled for Tommy John elbow reconstruction, and Kevin Plawecki shelved because a hairline fracture in his left hand.

Mets place d'Arnaud on disabled list with UCL tear

Unable to keep Travis d'Arnaud healthy for the first five years of his big league career, the Mets hoped they discovered the solution last August, when they began using d'Arnaud and Kevin Plawecki in a timeshare. Both catchers stayed healthy and productive down the stretch and into Spring Training. But another potentially serious injury for d'Arnaud has changed the equation.

Kevin Jeffrey Plawecki attended Westfield (IN) High School…Was a two-time All-Indy North, AllHoosiers Crossroads and All-Hamilton County selection...Played three seasons at Purdue…Was named Purdue's Male Athlete of the Year in 2012… Became the first player in school history to be named Big Ten Player of the Year…Was named Most Outstanding Player at the 2012 Big Ten tournament…Was named second team AllAmerica by Collegiate Baseball and was one of three finalists for the Johnny Bench Award as the nation's top collegiate catcher…Struck out 29 times in 638 career at-bats with the Boilermakers.

2017

Was with the Mets from April 19-May 25 and August 19 through the remainder of the season...Batted .303 (23-76) with four doubles, three homers, nine RBI and 12 walks in 27 games for the Mets after being recalled on August 19...His three homers matched his career-high (also 2015)...Threw out 6-of-31 potential basestealers (19%)...Worked 1.0 scoreless inning on August 29 at Cincinnati in his second relief appearance of the season...The only other Mets position player to be used as a reliever twice in one season was Matt Franco, who worked in two games in 1999...Also pitched 2.0 innings on April 30 at Washington...Allowed three home runs...Prior to Plawecki, the last Mets position player to pitch was Anthony Recker on June 30, 2013 vs. Washington...Made his first career appearance/start at first base in the second game of a doubleheader on September 25 at Atlanta... The only other player in team history to play first base, catcher and pitch in the same season was Todd Zeile, who did so in 2004...After the Triple-A All-Star break, Plawecki batted .344 (33-96) for Las Vegas.

2016

Made his first Opening Day roster....Optioned to Las Vegas (AAA) on June 21 and recalled on September 1...In his 45 games behind the plate, Mets pitching had a 3.47 ERA (135 earned runs/349.2 innings) with opposing hitters batting .252...Threw out 10 of 41 potential basestealers (24.4%)...Five of his 11 RBI either gave the Mets the lead or tied the game (three go-ahead, two game-tying)...Recorded his only game-winning RBI of the season when he drove in both runs in the Mets' 2-1 win over Miami on April 13 at Citi Field...His two-run single broke a 0-0 tie in the seventh inning...Hit his only home run of the season on May 9 at Los Angeles-NL...In 55 games for the 51s, he batted .300 (57-190) with 11 doubles, eight home runs, 40 RBI and 13 walks...Hit .305 (29-95) with six doubles in 25 games in August.

POSTSEASON

Named to the roster for the NL Wild Card Game vs. San Francisco but did not appear in the game. 

2015

Had his contract selected from Las Vegas (AAA) of the Pacific Coast League on April 21... Optioned to Vegas on August 12...Recalled on September 1 and spent the rest of the regular season with the Mets....Went 2-4 and scored two runs in his major league debut on April 21 vs. Atlanta...Was the sixth player in franchise history (and first since Carlos Gomez in 2007) to pick up both two hits and score two runs in his major league debut...Is the first Mets catcher to score two or more runs in his major league debut...Hit his first career home run, a two-out, tworun shot, on April 25 at Yankee Stadium...Went 2-4 with three RBI...Became the third catcher in franchise history to have a home run in one of his first four games...Was the first player for either team to hit his first ML home run in a Subway Series game... Threw out 11-of-43 (26%) runners attempting to steal...Made 66 starts behind the plate to lead the team... Batted .292 (14-48) with RISP... Had sinus surgery on December 14.

Was on the Mets postseason roster for the NLDS, NLCS and World Series but did not see any game action.  

2013

Named the Sterling Organizational Co-Player of the Year along with Allan Dykstra...Hit a combined .305 (137-449) with 38 doubles, eight home runs , 80 RBI with a .390 on-base percentage and an .838 OPS in 125 games between Savannah (A) of the South Atlantic League and St. Lucie (A) of the Florida State League...His batting average was the fourth-highest in the organization among full-season minor league clubs and his 80 RBI were the fifth-most...Was a mid-season SAL All-Star at Savannah where he hit .314 with 24 doubles and 43 RBI in 65 games before being promoted to St. Lucie...At Savannah, hit .460 (23-50) against lefthanded pitching...In the SAL, he had 12 games with two hits and eight games with three hits...Had three games with four RBI for the Sand Gnats...In April, he hit .391 (34-87) with 20 RBI in 23 April games…Also had a .300 average (33-110) in 29 games in May...Put together a 14-game hitting streak from April 19-May 4 (26-55,.473)...Had 15 two-hit games and three, three-hit games for St. Lucie. In his first game in the FSL, he went 2-5 with a home run and a season-best four RBI...In 34 games in June and July, he hit a combined 36-113 (.319)...Hit .348 (24-69) with men in scoring position.

2012

Played with Brooklyn (A) of the New York (A) Penn League in his first professional season…Led the Cyclones with seven home runs.
