Astros send out invites to Spring Training

The Astros on Friday announced they have invited 18 players who aren't on the 40-man roster to Major League Spring Training next month, including Minor League free agents Reid Brignac (infielder), Juan Centeno (catcher) and C.J. Riefenhauser (left-handed pitcher).

Earned first-team All-CIF Division IV honors in addition to earning Delphic League MVP honors as a senior at the Windward School (Los Angeles, CA) in 2009...also earned All-Region honorable mention accolades as a senior...established his high school's single-season batting average record with a .619 mark as a junior...Was not drafted out of high school and attended UCLA for three seasons (2010-12)...joined the team as a preferred walk-on...Selected as a Johnny Bench Award Semifinalist after hitting .351 (68x194) with seven doubles, 26 RBI and a .451 OBP for the Bruins as a junior...threw out 20 base stealers in 44 attempts (45%) in his final season at UCLA...was the only catcher selected to the Pac-12 All-Conference Team and was an honorable mention for the Pac-12 All-Academic Team in 2012...made just two errors in 521 total chances during his college career behind the plate...Selected by Houston in the eighth round of the 2012 draft...signed by Astros scout Tim Costic...His little brother Scott was drafted by Texas in the 11th round of the June 2015 draft and played his first professional season in 2016 with Class A High Desert...Is currently signed to a minor league contract for the 2016 season...invited to his fourth consecutive Major League Spring Training in 2017

Skipped low A ball and played his entire second professional season with Advanced Class A Lancaster...hit .286 (106x370) with 23 doubles, four triples, 13 home runs, 71 RBI and a .361 on-base percentage in 104 games...led all California League catchers in fielding percentage (.991), assists (90) and caught stealing percentage (41.7%) in his 100 games behind the dish...hit .297 (93x313) against right-handed pitchers...hit his first professional home run on May 19 vs. Rancho Cucamonga, which marked his 90th game as a professional.

2012

Selected by the Astros in the eighth round of the June draft out of UCLA on June 5...was the first catcher taken by Houston in the 2012 draft...signed his professional contract on June 22...reported to Class A Tri-City, where he led the New York-Penn League with a .358 (69x193) batting average...also ranked second in the NYPL in OBP (.452) and OPS (.882)...hit 14 doubles, drove in 26, walked 26 times and struck out only 12 times in his 55 games on the season...posted a .997 fielding percentage (1E/311TC) in his 37 games behind the plate...played his other 18 games on the season as a designated hitter...named the Tri-City Defensive Player of the Month in August.
