Odrisamer (oh-DREE-sah-mer) Orue Despaigne (deh-SPAWN- yay)...married to Arlenys...played professionally for Havana Industriales of Cuba's Serie Nacional for eight seasons before signing with San Diego...posted a career 61-43 record and 3.55 ERA (957.1/378) with 684 strikeouts and 390 walks in 213 games. 

2016

Split season between starting rotation (17 starts) and bullpen (37 appearances) with Baltimore, Triple-A Norfolk and Miami, going a combined 1- 11 with a 4.40 ERA (118.2 ip/58 er)...Opened season in starting rotation with Norfolk, making 12 starts prior to being recalled by Baltimore on June 14. Prior to recall, posted 1-6 record and 3.59 ERA (62.2/25)... Tossed season-best 6.2 scoreless innings in lone win of season, May 21 at Syracuse. Allowed eight hits without walking a batter and struck out seven... From May 16 to August 24, allowed more than one run just two times, while holding opponents scoreless four times. Owned 1.84 ERA (44.0/9) over nine-game stretch that included a scoreless 4.0 inning relief appearance on Aug. 24 vs. Rochester... Made first appearance of season with Baltimore on June 15 at Boston, tossing 2.2 scoreless frames... Surrendered two runs (one earned) in next appearance, June 19 vs. Toronto, before providing five consecutive scoreless outings (4.2 ip)... Was designated for assignment on September 5 and claimed off waivers by Miami on Sept. 15...Made three appearances out of bullpen with Miami, surrendering three runs in 3.0 innings.

Set career-highs in almost every category, including wins (five), losses (nine), games (34), games started (18), innings pitched (125.2 IP), and strikeouts (69) • Posted a 5-9 record with a 5.80 ERA (81 ER/125.2 IP) and 69 strikeouts and 32 walks while limiting the opposition to a .287 batting average in 34 games (18 starts) for the Padres • Made the first relief appearances of his career...Posted a 7.30 ERA (20 ER/24.2 IP) in 16 games out of the bullpen compared to a 5.44 ERA (61 ER/101.0 IP) as a starter • Began the season in the bullpen, making his first appearance of the season on 4/9 vs. SF in the third inning in relief of an injured Ian Kennedy and threw 4.2 perfect innings, the longest perfect outing by a reliever in team history and the longest by a Major League relief pitcher since Pittsburgh's Vin Mazzaro went 5.0 perfect frames on 6/30/13 vs. MIL • On two occasions, appeared in a single series as both a starter and a reliever: 4/20 (start) and 4/23 (relief) at COL and 9/11 (relief) and 9/13 (start) at SF...The last Padres pitcher to appear in two separate series in the same season as both a starter and a reliever was Andy Hawkins during the 1983 season...Hawkins started a game for the Padres on 6/24/83 at SF and entered the game in relief on 6/26 (GM1) and started a game on 8/30/83 at PHI (GM1) and entered the game the following day on 8/31 as a reliever • Prior to Despaigne, the last Major League pitcher to twice in one season make both a start and a relief appearance in a single series was Montreal's Sun Woo Kim during the 2004 season...Kim started the game on 6/28/04 at PHI and entered a game in relief on 7/1 and also entered a game in relief on 8/6 at HOU and started two days later on 8/8 • Posted a 17.0-inning scoreless streak from 5/21-31, a span of three appearances (two starts), the longest scoreless streak by a Padres pitcher in 2015

Signed with the Padres as a minor league free agent on 5/2, making his Major League debut with 16 starts after making seven starts between Double-A San Antonio and Triple-A El Paso...Made his Major League debut on 6/23 at SF, earning the win after working 7.0 shutout innings...Per STATS, Inc, was the seventh Major Leaguer since 1914 to pitch 7.0-or-more shutout innings and not allow a walk in his Big League debut...was the fourth pitcher in Padres franchise history to pitch 7.0-or-more shutout innings in his MLB debut, joining Ricky Bones on 8/11/91 (7.0 IP), Eric Nolte on 8/1/87 (7.0 IP) and Jimmy Jones on 9/21/86 (9.0 IP)...Became the second Cuban-born pitcher to ever appear in a game for the Padres (Eddie Oropesa, 16 games in 2004) and the first to ever make a start...His debut with starting catcher Yasmani Grandal was the first time since 6/13/69 that a Major League team started an all Cubanborn battery, per ELIAS…RHP Camilo Pascual and C Paul Casanova were the last such to do so for the Washington Senators...Over his 16 Major League starts total, went 4-7 with a 3.36 ERA (36 ER, 96.1 IP) and 65 strikeouts against 32 walks...Became the seventh player in Padres franchise history to earn a winning decision in each of his first two career appearances, joining Mike Thompson (2006), Oliver Perez (2002), Brian Tollberg in (2000), Joey Hamilton (1994), Larry Hardy (1974) and Dave Freisleben (1974)…the sixth starting pitcher in franchise history to do so...Over his eight starts at Petco Park, went 3-1 with a 1.83 ERA (11 ER, 54.0 IP) and 39 strikeouts against 16 walks while limiting opponents to a .188 average…with his first home start for the Padres on 6/29 vs. ARI, his home ERA in that time ranked sixth among qualifying National League starters (min. 45.0 IP)...Among NL rookies with as many-or-more innings (96.1), his 3.36 ERA and .237 opponents average ranked second-best...On 7/20 vs. NYM at Petco Park, tossed 7.2 innings of no-hit baseball before allowing a double to Daniel Murphy in the eighth, the longest no-hit bid by the Padres since Aaron Harang, Josh Spence, Chad Qualls and Mike Adams combined to throw 8.2 no-hit innings on 7/9/11 at LAD… was the longest individual no-hit effort for the Padres since Chris Young also went 7.2 no-hit innings 9/7/08 at MIL before Gabe Kapler homered with two-outs in the eighth inning...Began his career by working 6.0-or-more innings and allowing one run-or-less in his first three starts (6/23-7/5), the first starting pitcher in Padres history to do so and 11th Major Leaguer since 1914 to do so...Also began his career by working 6.0-or-more innings and allowing two earned runs-or-less in five of his first six starts, becoming the first pitcher in Padres history to do so and 16th National League pitcher since 1914 to do so.
